Only In Onslow

Outdoor Fun & Adventures in Onslow

Retired Marine Colonel and outdoor enthusiast, Lance Ledoux, owner of Bayonet Enterprise Cruises in Jacksonville, has suggested a few ways to enjoy Onslow’s natural beauty outdoors!

Camp on Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park

What a beautiful place! Getting to Bear Island is part of the outdoor lover’s adventure.  Take the pontoon ferry from Hammocks Beach State Park, or your own small boat to Bear IslandPrimitive camping is by permit at one of the several prepared sites. What an amazing spot for long walks along the beach!   Views of  Emerald Isle and Bogue Inlet can be seen at one end of the island.   If you enjoy looking for shells, there lots to be found!  While on the island, enjoy a nice bathhouse with hot showers and numerous covered picnic tables.

Take a paddling trip along the New River in Jacksonville

Access is made easy to the beautiful New River via Jacksonville Landing in downtown Jacksonville. This recreational access point has three boat ramps, two docks as well as a canoe and kayak launch, boardwalk and public restrooms. You’ll find plenty of parking for your vehicle and boat trailer if you plan on taking your boat out as part of your visit.

Insider Tip!  Plan a Day Trip to Fort Fisher

If you are visiting, go see the beautiful grounds and beaches at, Fort Fisher – about a 1 hour and 45-minute drive from Jacksonville. Take the guided tour – the staff there is friendly and knowledgeable.  I personally learned several new facts about the Civil War.  A very enjoyable experience!
