Most overlooked area to recreate?

One of the most overlooked areas to recreate is at Stone Creek trails. It is a game land area off of Highway 17. Easy loop trails around small lakes. Be advised no bathrooms and during hunting season make sure to wear bright orange.

What’s your favorite season to recreate in NC and why?

My favorite time to visit is in the fall. The temperature is very mild, the leaves change color and it is still warm enough to enjoy a day at the beach.

What level of experience is needed to recreate in this area?

The rails to trails is a great way to get outdoors and explore on their paved path. Start at Lejeune Memorial Gardens and go to the Holcomb gate at MCB Camp Lejeune and back. The path is paved but also has wooden bridges.

How long should you plan on visiting the area?

I would recommend 2-3 days to visit the area.

What sets the area apart from other destinations?

Onslow County is home to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River. We are a patriotic county dedicated to providing a great place to live and work for those that sacrifice for our country.

How do you plan ahead and prepare for your recreational activity?

Check out the local tourism website to see what outdoor activities are available. If you have a kayak, check out all the spots you can put in the water. If you have a bike, check out Big Branch Bike Park. If you like to watch birds, check out the NC Birding trails and find them in Onslow County.

What piece of outdoor equipment is your must-have?

A must have piece of outdoor equipment is a camera so you can take pictures of all the foliage, birds and the sites.

How do you put one Outdoor NC Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity?

Whenever we go for a hike we always make sure to keep track of our trash we use and dispose of it properly.

Favorite place to visit before or after an outdoor adventure for a meal/coffee/or another beverage?

I have a few favorite places to visit.

In Swansboro, Preston’s corner has a diverse menu. Their shrimp tacos are the best!

In Jacksonville, the Kettle Diner has yummy sticky french toast with a seasonal twist throughout the year.

In Sneads Ferry, Topsail Brewing is a fun place to grab a drink and relax. Go on a Monday for Music Bingo. They’re also dog friendly so we can take our dog with us.

Share a unique place to stay in the area. Why would you recommend these accommodations?

There are several options to stay in the area. I recommend staying at a rental in downtown Swansboro. It is a quaint little town that is easy to walk around, grab a coffee at Bake, Bottle & Brew and sit out on their balcony overlooking the water. Splurge on fresh seafood for dinner and enjoy live music at Willy Nilly.

Other overlooked and under-visited locations in the area to see while in town?

The Onslow County Museum in Richlands is a real treat. You can learn about the history of Onslow County.

What is your ‘can’t-miss experience’ in the area?

Take the ferry over to Bear Island. Enjoy a beautiful day at the beach on a private island.

Insider tip!

Have dinner at Il Cigno Italian restaurant and ask to be seated on the back deck. You can enjoy a delicious meal overlooking the white oak river.
